Structured data makes facts explicit, it does not guarantee use

Structured data expresses facts about a page in a machine-readable form rather than leaving them implicit in prose. Google’s own introduction to structured data documents how it is used for search features such as rich results, and is explicit that marking up content does not guarantee any particular treatment. No AI answer engine publishes a guarantee that marked-up facts are used in generated answers either; treat structured data as reducing ambiguity, not as a citation mechanism.

Which types matter most for factual answer content

Article, FAQPage, HowTo-style step lists (where genuinely sequential), Product, and Organization schema each encode a different class of fact: authorship and dates, question-answer pairs, ordered steps, product attributes, and entity identity respectively. Pick the type that actually matches the page’s content structure. Marking a page as FAQPage when it has no real visible question-and-answer content creates a mismatch between the structured data and the visible page, which is a trust and consistency problem independent of any search feature.

Keep structured data and visible content in sync

A common and avoidable error is structured data that states something the visible page does not say, or omits a visible fact. If a FAQ entry’s answer text changes, update the matching JSON-LD in the same edit. Automated or manual review should check this pairing specifically, not just that the JSON-LD parses as valid JSON.

Validate parsing, not just presence

Confirm the JSON-LD block is syntactically valid JSON, uses the correct @context and @type, and that required properties for that type are present. A page can include a script tag that looks like structured data and still fail to parse, which makes it functionally absent to any consumer.

Don’t over-mark

Only mark up what the page actually and verifiably states. Do not add review, rating, or price structured data for claims the page does not make, and do not duplicate the same entity across conflicting schema blocks on one page. Overclaiming in structured data is the same integrity problem as overclaiming in prose, just in a machine-readable form.

Frequently asked questions

Does adding structured data guarantee an AI citation?

No. No AI answer engine publishes a citation guarantee tied to structured data; it only makes facts explicit and reduces ambiguity for any machine consumer, including search features that do document specific uses.

Should every guide page have FAQPage schema?

Only if it has genuine visible question-and-answer content in that format. Forcing FAQ schema onto a page without matching visible content creates an inconsistency.
